April marks National Minority Health Month and offers us a time to acknowledge the health disparities in our country.
Health disparities are preventable differences in health outcomes, disease burden, and healthcare access. They often disproportionately affect populations shaped by social determinants including race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, sexual orientation, and geographic location.
For these populations, this can result in higher rates of chronic disease, lower life expectancy, and limited healthcare access in historically underserved communities.
At WellCare of North Carolina, we are committed to tackling health disparities at the root cause, addressing the cultural, economic, and systemic barriers that impact minority groups. This commitment is not just in April, but each and every month. We focus on taking action to close these gaps and improve health outcomes through targeted initiatives including expanding access to preventive care, as well as ensuring proper screenings, immunization, and wellness exams for early detection. Additionally, specialized programs focused on condition management can provide education and support for individuals with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.
Through these initiatives and others, our goal is to empower individuals to better understand and manage their health.
The WellCare of North Carolina team is continuously working to strengthen community partnerships to improve healthcare accessibility across the State of North Carolina. Through collaboration with local organizations, we are helping address the peripheral factors that influence health, such as housing, food security, and transportation. Overall, these partnerships aim to ensure that individuals receive the resources necessary to live a healthier life.
If you’re living with a chronic condition like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, or depression, WellCare of North Carolina offers personalized support to help you manage your health and reduce complications.
Together, we can drive meaningful change and build healthier, more equitable communities – helping individuals not just get well, but stay well and thrive.
